Program Notes
In October of 1995 I was approached by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra here in New York and Producer Ettore Stratta. There was to be a Memorial concert in honor of the late Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim at Carnegie Hall the following month. They asked me to do a piece in honor of him and base it on one of his lesser known songs "Modinha". When I heard the piece I immediately fell in love with it. Since the song is only 16 bars long and the orchestra wanted a 5 minute work I had to add some musical material to round it off. The new material consists of the introduction, several interludes and the closing statement (which brings back the opening material). The instrumentation is for the full Orpheus ensemble. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra rehearses and performs without a conductor.
